Is this VAT number check official?
Yes. It calls HMRC's "Check a UK VAT number" API directly. If you enter your own VAT number as the requester you receive an HMRC consultation number, which is your proof of the check.
What does a UK VAT number look like?
A UK VAT registration number is "GB" followed by 9 digits (or 12 for branches). Northern Ireland businesses trading under the Protocol use the "XI" prefix.
Can I check EU VAT numbers here?
No — this tool checks UK (GB) numbers with HMRC. For EU numbers use the EU VIES service.
